Because of third-party libraries FreeCAD cannot change its license to GPL. Problem is, the two open source projects which could (gladly) use LibreDWG, that is LibreCAD and FreeCAD, are licensed under the LPGL hence cannot use LibreDWG. The reason is a license issue: The Free Software Foundation owns LibreDWG's code, and insists on keeping a strict GPL license. The only existing open source DWG library project, LibreDWG, has been for all purposes abandoned by its developers for the past couple of years. Of course their nature mean they cannot be used in an open source project like FreeCAD. A few commercial DWG libraries exist the most known is from the Open Design Alliance, which contrary to its name does not produce open source libraries. The added difficulty is the fact Autodesk changes its file format every 3-4 years. This means that Autodesk, owner and developer of this format, does not publish specs for it.Ĭompetitors need to reverse engineer the format to be able to read/write it.
